GBS provided sustainability consulting and retro-commissioning services to the San Diego Convention Center (SDCC), a 2.6 million-sf facility in Southern California. The 20-year-old “West Wing” was the focus of a major renovation, which included replacement of plumbing fixtures and interior finishes in 26 restrooms. These updates helped achieve environmental and operational efficiency goals, notably a 21% water-use reduction, while an irrigation system upgrade and updated tracking procedure resulted in 43% irrigation water use reduction. Other measures achieved an ENERGY STAR Equivalent Rating of 83.
GBS’ retro-commissioning team identified deficiencies in mechanical equipment, lighting, and related controls, and determined opportunities for corrective action and other operational and maintenance improvements. Equipment and operations were assessed through observation, functional testing, and analysis of trend data from portable loggers and the building automation system (BAS). GBS identified the source of energy use problems and quantified the effect of improvements. We evaluated the kinds of energy use that escape notice when looking at more summary data, such as utility bills. From GBS’ findings, SDCC selected seven measures for implementation, mostly focused on improvements in HVAC air handler operations. These measures will result in the following savings:
